Approach
The hitter is required line up slightly behind the 10 foot line, having their left foot slightly in the front and their arms at the sides. The hitter is then required to step forward with their right leg which will be followed by their left. After the hitter hops forward and is able to plant his or her feet firmly on the ground, the player needs to make sure that he or she is facing the setter. Then they are required to bend their knees and jump. The hitter is required to swing their arms behind as well as they plant their feet onto the ground. While jumping, the hitter should make use of their forward momentum in order to move upwards. They should then move his or her arms upward and over their head. This motion can help them to propel higher when they are jumping.
Positioning
When hitting, the hitter is required to position himself in a way so that the ball is always in front of him/her. The reason for this is because the hitter has to be able to judge which direction the ball will head towards as soon as it leaves the setter’s hands. Placing themselves at the right spot is also very important. If the distance between the hitter and the ball is too much, then they will be able to only tip the ball over the volley net. In the instance that the ball is too close, the hitter will have to contort in the air in order to loop it over the net.
Arm Swing
In order to hit the volleyball properly, the hitter should be able to quickly bring their left arm down after they have made their jump .Then they should move their shoulders and hips around in order to hit the ball. The ball is to be hit using the force of their whole body, not just using their arms and shoulders. The ball is to be hit on the upper back section. The ball should also be hit with spread fingers and an open hand. The player has to make sure that the force on the ball should be downward. The same force should also be applied when the player who is acting as the hitter is at their maximum height while jumping.
Timing
The hitters are required to time their approach to the ball. The ball should be hit just as the players are coming down from their jump. The ball can be at some other point in its trajectory or at its maximum height. This will be dependent on the height to which the hitter is able to jump and the speed of the ball. If the hitter is coming down when they are hitting the ball, then they are making a mistake and jumping too early. Furthermore, if the ball is at a certain height of the head when they are hitting it, they are jumping too late.
