This drill is a great soccer coaching drill all around. It will help players improve about every basic skill which includes skills such as communication, shooting, vision, transition, receiving and passing.
This drill works best with at least 14 to 17 players, which will include the two keepers. The game can start with big goals, even U10 goals will work for this drill. The players can use a basketball court as boundaries. The group should be divided into teams of 3. One keeper should be positioned on each goal. If we assume that the game being played is with a total of 17 players, then the game would have 5 v 5 , plus the keepers. The coach will decide the duration for each game, a 20 minutes game is sufficient enough. The game can be started with any of the two teams with the third team on the side. This game has very simple rules. It is basic soccer but anytime a ball goes out of bounds or over a sideline, the team that it went out off of, will have to get off the field and the team on the side line or the one that is resting will get to play. This drill is a type of game which encourages players to carry out quick transitions as well as possession of the ball and the shooting. Another way to get the opposing team off the field is to score a point or a goal. For the team that gets scored upon, they will have to leave the field and the team that was able to score the goal stays on and gets the ball in their possession and gets a chance to attacks the opposing goal.
This drill encourages the players to really think quickly on the field instead of just kicking the ball or simply do what they are required to do. An added bonus of this game, which adds to the fun element is hearing the players yell to the team that loses the ball out of bounds “Get out of here”.
