Stair and Wall Jumps
Practicing jumps ensures that the landing of the players is stable, and also helps at the time of an attack. In order to perform the stair jumps, players should use boxes or a flight of stairs and each of them will jump on it with both their feet close together. They should aim to stay on the stairs for as little time as they possibly can.
Cone Hops
The cone hop can is especially important as it helps practice stability. A cone should be placed on the ground and the coach should have the players quickly jump over the cone from side to side, overtime increasing their pace of the jumps as they become more and more stable.
Compass
The game begins with marking out a rough compass on the field and having each player face the north while standing in the centre. Players must then move from the middle to the point marking each of the direction and then back again using only their footwork they tend to normally use in a game.
Line and “Plus” Jumps
These drills can help to ensure that each player get adequate practice in the technique of short and quick jumps which are essential in a volleyball game. Players would be asked to jump quickly along a line drawn sideways, firstly on both their legs and then 1 leg, completing round about thirty jumps each time. This drill can then be repeated by the coach drawing a “plus” sign and asking the players to jump from 1 quadrant to the other in a similar fashion, first in a clockwise manner and then counter clockwise.
Sprints
Unlike the basic sprints, this drill helps to create a team of more agile players. Players would have to start sprinting at the blow of a whistle and then change into a jog when the whistle is blown the second time. The coach may substitute the jog with other exercises such as jumps skips, or any other footwork drills.
