PASSING DRILLS
Toss and Pass
In this basic drill, 1 partner tosses the ball to the other partner, who then has to pass it back. Do at least ten repetitions
Short and Deep Passes
This is a type of variation on the above drill. The player will have their partner do a short toss that they have to move their feet in order to get to. The second toss should be a deep toss for which they will have to shuffle back to reach. It will help teach them how to move to reach anything near them and still be able to return a controlled pass.
Wall Passes
This drill works best with a partner. Simply a player needs to find a blank wall, toss the volleyball against the wall and begin the passes of the ball back against the wall.
SETTING DRILLS
Lie Down and Set
The player will have to lie down on their back with their knees bent. Quickly, they will need to set the ball to them self 100 times without pushing the volleyball too high.
Have a Seat
In this drill, a player will grab a partner and sit cross-legged about ten feet apart. They will then set the ball back and forth to one another. This will help in developing arm strength.
One-on-One Setting
The player will set the ball back and forth to a partner who will be across the net from them. The aim is to keep going as long as they can.
DEFENSIVE DRILLS
Blocking Drill
A player will have to stand in front of a wall and jump straight in the air. They will them press their hands against the wall in a proper blocking, while keeping their arms straight and fingers spread wide. Then, they will touch their toes to the wall as their hands make contact. Players, by jumping in front of a solid wall, will learn to jump straight down and up during a game situation so they do not hit the net.
Run and Dig
One player tosses balls to their partner on the other side of the net. The second player has to scramble to return each ball – the first player has to purposely aim for empty spaces to make the returns difficult. The drill helps to teach the defensive player the importance of being able to hustle in order to keep every ball from hitting the ground.
Off the Ground
Players are required to lie on their belly on the ground and have one partner toss a random ball in the air. As they do so, the player has to quickly jump up and play the ball any way they can to get it over the volley net. This drill is terrific for teaching quick reactions, and helps players get over the fear of falling on the ground in the middle of the game.
