Several fundamental hockey skills go into making up a complete player, but some outshine the others. Making big saves and defensive stops, scoring goals; these are very noticeable to someone watching the game. But it’s the small things that aid in making these big things happen.
Below is a list of hockey skills that are often overlooked by players but ones that if utilized, really make a difference in the play.
Attacking the Net:
It’s great to look for an open pass, but if you see an opportunity of taking a shot closer to the net, than this opportunity MUST be exploited. It is proven that the nearer you are to the goal line, the greater the chances are of the puck going in. Trying to deke across a crowd and looking for a teammate is not always a good idea. Rather, new lanes for shooting open up by skillful stick work.
Offense + Defense:
It is important to remember that defense and offense work together. As a player, it is your responsibility to your fellow teammates, to fulfill your role on either side of the ice. Defensemen and the goal keepers depend on the forwards for their defensive roles and to help in shooting lanes and block passing. They also depend on them for bringing the puck of the zone and terminate offensive threats from the opposition. At the end, it doesn’t matter how many goals you shoot, if you don’t fulfill your role at the defensive end.
Good Passes Matter:
Good passes are easier said than done. Passes should be precise and on point and reach right on your teammates stick. Pass should not be made where the receiver currently is, rather where he will be when you pass it. Boards and skates should be used in your favor when you’re trying to move or free the puck.
Communicate:
Communication is the key both when on the ice and also when off of it. Your interaction with your coach and teammates, the sort of language used by you, how you converse with officials; all of this is observed by people around you. The sort of person you are on the rink, is seen as a reflection of who you actually are as a person. During the game, be vocal, motivate your teammates and be helpful.
Be Prepared:
This is not directly related to the game, but this could actually affect it. Before going to the game, you must be properly rested and must have had a proper meal so you can give the game your best. You should check your equipment to see if it’s in proper order for the game. Don’t fret on these things at the last minute as this will affect your game.
