Essential ball handling drills are an awesome approach to enhance your beginner players’ basics and establish the framework for future improvement.
These activities will support your player’s nearby ball control so they don’t get overwhelmed, while also upgrading their dribbling, passing and getting aptitudes.
Pass and Get Past – Passing Relay
Player 1 passes to player 2. After passing, player 1 sprints cross-court to the cone to try and screen player 3. Player 3 needs to side-step and feint their way past player 1 before running to the other side to receive the pass on the cone. Player 3 then dribbles inside before passing to player 1 who has the shot.
Cone Dribbling
Set up 8 cones in a straight line, the full length of the court. Players start on the baseline in an attack position. Player dribbles to the first cone with the right hand. Once he reaches the first cone, he changes direction using any of the following basketball moves; behind the back, crossover, between the legs, in & out crossover, double crossover.
The ball should go from the player’s right hand to your left hand moving towards the 2nd cone. Every time you get close to a cone you should be changing direction. The player continues this interchange all the way down the court. The player finishes at the rim (left or right hand) and speed dribbles back down to the beginning point of the drill
The next player in line starts the drill when the previous player has reached the 3rd cone. The 2nd player shouldn’t catch the 1st player.
2 Balls – Coordination and Reaction
Both players will face each other 10 feet apart. They will roll the ball forward and backward controlling the b-ball with just one hand. The b-ball should to be rolled in a straight line and controlled with the hand the ball was moved to.
