The purpose of coil is that it helps players develop a certain routine for getting into the box, for getting into the proper stance and coiling. This drill also helps develop the timing used when a player attempts to coil. Equipment that is needed for this drill are a bat and a helmet. The setup of the drill involves setting up a group of players with no bats or having a batting practice station. The execution will involve having each player learning to get a proper grip on their bats and stepping into an imaginary batter’s box. The players can take the help of a glove to assist them in order to simulate a plate.
Each player will be required to take their stance and get themselves prepared for the pitch. The coach will have the task to simulate a windup and deliver an imaginary pitch to the player. The hitter’s main goal will be to work on his coil and to freeze when he is able to complete it.
Things which are necessary to watch for while attempting to carry out this drill are that, the players need to make sure that they are grasping the idea of a proper grip as it is an essential tool in baseball. Secondly, the player needs to be and look comfortable as well as relaxed during the game. The coach needs to analyze whether the weight shift of each player is enough or too much. For example, the player who is hitting should not be rolling their own weight onto the outside of their back foot ,too much. Furthermore, the players should be aware of their hands and should make sure that they are positioned properly. At times, players tend to turn in their lead hip as well as shoulder a bit too much, which eventually also causes their head to turn. When an individual player freezes, the coach should check to see that they are able to see both eyes. It is important to have each player repeat this drill, having them step out of the box and get the sign from the 3rd base coach each and every time.
