The purpose is to allow pitchers to work on their pick-off moves to first and the runners learn to work on reading the pitchers moves and being able to get a good jump. The equipment required for first base pick offs is four baseballs in particular and helmets for base runners to wear.
The setup involves having 4 pitchers on the mound, with each of the four facing towards a base. The coach should assign a player to act as a 1st baseman at each and every base and a runner is required to lead off each base. Each pitcher will be assigned a different home plate as well as first base.
The execution involves the coach staying or placing himself on the mound in the middle of all the pitchers. He will give the pitchers an option to either pick-off the runner or to simulate a throw home. The runners will always be trying and attempting to steal the base and try to get a good jump. The older players have an option to make the throw home, but the throw home for much younger players will prevent 2 balls being thrown to the same base at one time.
