Four goal game is a type of soccer drill which helps players in developing skills in turn of covering as well as balancing in defense positions and also assist in developing passing and switching play in attack mode. This particular drill helps encourage players to keep their heads up, switch the play regularly, while also being able to make quick decisions on the soccer field. Four goal game is a regular soccer game but the only difference is that in this game, each team has a set of two goals that they can attempt to shoot for.
The set up of the game involves having an area or field of approximately 60 by 60 yards square. At each corner of this grid, four small goals are placed. In this drill, the goalkeepers do not play. Thus, each team defends the two goals at one end while attempting to attack the other two goals at the far end. The players, in this drill, play possession soccer, which means that they attempt to ‘pull’ the bulk of the defenders in order to defend one goal before they are able to switch the ball swiftly towards the less well-guarded goal and make an attempt to score there.
A variation or development of this game involves having players play 1 or 2 touch soccer. Furthermore, the coach can award players extra points for goals which they are able to make directly from the team switching play.
Some coaching points for this drill, four goal game, could be that for the players playing offense, they are basically up the players and have to switch fields. As for the players who are playing the position of defense, they need to play smart and think quick on their feet because the extra goal that they will shoot, will make it seem as if they are playing down a player.
