A chip shot in golf is a short low approach shot that lofts the ball into the air and allows it to roll. It is important to keep a few things in mind while playing a chip shot.
Keys to Chipping
Distance is always more important than the direction of your shot hence you need to work on distance control. It also helps to visualize the shot in your mind before practicing your swing. This will help you get the right ball trajectory.
Always pick your spot before you chip a shot. You want to land your shot on the putting surface, since it is flatter and well-prepared. Landing a chip shot on rocky uneven surface is generally a bad idea and should be avoided.
Choose the right golf club based on the distance between your chosen spot and the hole. If you have only 15 feet, you need a more lofted club so that the ball doesn’t run too far. However, if the gap is bigger you should use a more flat faced club like a 7-iron to make the shot.
A general rule of thumb for chip shots is to maximize your ground time and minimize your air time. It’s better to let the ball roll on the ground towards the hole rather than in the air as the ball may change its direction after the first bounce.
Drills for Chipping
Put a head cover under your main arm and hit some chip shots. This drill helps keep your entire body engaged throughout the chip.
You can also use an alignment rod coming out of the grip end of your club and point it towards your lead hip. This will guide you while performing the chip shot.
You also need to make sure that your chest is turning during the shot. Once your shot is finished your chest should be facing your target.
