Ground ball – backhand drill is used to teach the in-fielders on the fielding techniques. These techniques are for hitting on the right side. To start up with the game, you will need a glove and one cone along with the baseball. The cone should be placed between short and third or it can be altered at second and short. A player ought to stand between the cone set-up and the first base. You should catch all the throws coming to him. Coach will stand on the in-field grass.
The coach will start the game when he rolls the ground wall. This would either be done near the cone or towards the right side of the player. In case the ground ball is rolled near the cone, the player is supposed to go around the ball, use his right foot and reach the ball while moving towards his own target. He should roll the ball around the given cone and the speed should be decided as per the movement around the cone. In case the ground ball is rolled towards the right, the player is supposed to reach the ball and backhand it. After you field the ball, the player will move towards the base. A good throw matters a lot, as it helps them to work on their momentum, velocity, balance and the footwork they need. The momentum can be in the direction you are required to throw the ball at. If you are playing with the rookies, you will keep the cone nearby while if they already have mastered the technique, you should move the cone farther. The far the cone has been placed, the more chance you will get to throw the ball with varied speeds, directions and hops. To guide them how to field the ball smoothly, you should make sure that the ball can stop their momentum and doesn’t end up in the right.
