This is a method of skiing whereby you ski downhill, off-trail by the use of a helicopter instead of a skit lift. Heli skiing is an innovative and fun way of skiing but do take the following factors into consideration.
Note: the info given below is not factual, rather opinion-based.
How this idea came into being?
It was Hans Gmoser who came up with this idea in April 1965. At that time, no one else had tried it yet. He started using helicopters to drop off skiers into the otherwise unreachable mountain of Bugaboo, Canada. This idea gained instant popularity.
Should you try heli-skiing?
This method of skiing isn’t for everyone. You can find out if it’s for you by asking yourself the questions given below:
Are you a good skier or a good snowboarder?
For you to enjoy heli-skiing, you should have experience of going through a variety of situations and conditions, be it on one plank or two.
You should have an extensive experience of skiing in a typical resort environment.
Your run options are primarily black/blue and you are confident doing them in just about any circumstances.
You have improved upon your skiing aptitude over the years and you are able to go on multiple days ski trips.
You may not necessarily have a flaunting ski style, but you do know when you are doing good turns.
You are a pro at taking parallel turns and if required, you are able to: step-up sideways, side-step, do kick turns and traverse.
You have moved from a beginner level equipment to a high standard equipment while you were going through the process of turning into a better skier.
You do not necessarily have a lot experience of powder skiing, but you can sustain control in backcountry settings.
Does your health permit you to do it?
It drains you of your energy to ride powders and do skiing all day long. You should be fit enough to get the most of this heli-skiing extravaganza.
Are you okay with the risks involved?
Even though heli-skiing operators are extra cautious of safety measures, but it is important to accept that anything is possible when you go on the mountains. Before you go heli-skiing, you are required to sign an extensive disclaimer of liability.
