The prime purpose of infield rotation drill is to train the player to ground ball in three different ways. The equipment used are the baseball, bats and the cones. You can also bring in a few extra cones in order to mark the starting point. The game starts when you part the group into four teams. The first team will split and get the toss next to the coach. The coach will stand near the starting point while the other three groups will be in the opposite side.
Each coach will hit the ground ball to the defender before them. In this case an ordinary ground ball is hit to the defender at the top. Or a planned forehand grounder is hit to the defender in the centre. A planned throw is a hit to the defender which is close to third base.
Timed forehand or a throw is a sign to defender that he should hold up and strategize his time so he can either deal the throw with his forehand or with a throw again. Once many balls have been thrown and grounded by all the players, all the teams gather at one place.
We can hit the ground balls all at one time or at any other point strategically. The player is supposed to handle the ball, make a toss and move to the end of the line after that.
Just like all the drills which require the presence of bat, you should be concerned with the security and safety. While moving from station to station, the players should be concerned about how they operate with the bat and should stay far from their coach.
