Killer whale is one of the dribbling soccer drills practiced by soccer players. The setup of this drill or game involves creating a large circle with the help of cones. Then, there needs to be approximately 4 to 14 players positioned inside the circle, who will be dribbling using a soccer ball. The two defensive players wearing pinnies will be known as the “Killer Whales”. Players in the age group of 6 to 14 can be made to practice this drill. It helps teach players both the techniques of dribbling as well as shielding.
The main objective of this soccer drill is for one of the two “killer whales” to kick as many soccer balls outside of the large circle, made with cones, as he can. Each ball that goes outside the large circle will be worth one point. The players with a soccer ball try to shield the ball from the players positioned as killer whale. If the ball of any of the players gets kicked out of the large circle, then they are supposed to retrieve the ball and continue dribbling within the circle. The players who will be known as the “killer whales” in this drill or game can usually go for around 30 to 60 seconds and they are required to keep track of their own score in each of the game. It is essential for the coach to make sure that everyone gets a chance to be assigned the position of a killer whale. Thus the game should be repeated with different players assigned new positions. The winner would be the player who is able to kick out the most balls within one game.
Variations that can be made for this type of drill could be using stop watch in each game to time it. Furthermore, a single player or two players can be positioned or used as killer whales depending on the number of players.
