Musical chairs is a soccer dribbling drill. The setup of this drill involves having two circular grids. One grid being smaller and the other grid being large in size. It is important that the inner circle should be large enough to allow all the players to dribble around the circle comfortably. As for the outer circle, it should be almost 10 yards away from the inner circle for players who are six years old and between 20 yards for players who are 11 years old. The equipment required are around twenty or so flat cones and a soccer ball for each of the soccer players.
Players each with their own particular ball, dribble around the smaller grid. They need to be dribbling at a better than average pace, maintaining a strategic distance from each other and keeping their heads up. After the players have been dribbling for some time, the coach will call out the word “SWITCH”. When this happens every player must stop their ball, abandon it where it is, and circle around a cone on the outer circle and keep running once again into the small circle to another or different soccer ball. It is essential for the players to get to the new balls immediately and keep dribbling.
When they get settled with the idea of the musical chairs drill, one player’s soccer ball will be removed. This player now should continue the drill without a ball. At the point when the following “Switch” happens, players again rush to the outside circle and over into the smaller one. Any player who doesn’t wind up with a ball after a “Change” needs to keep running round the grid.
Some coaching points for this drill are that it is important to encourage the younger players to dribble with their heads up and attempt to try to not bump into one another. Coaches should also include commands such as “go”, “stop”, “turn left/right”, and before calling “cone”. As for the older players, they can be asked to perform a move known as a “step–over”.
