Swimming in open water is difficult than swimming in a pool for obvious reasons. It’s deep, Dangerous and pretty different but with these workouts you’ll get proper preparation and training.
Workout #1 will help develop sighting techniques and a strong breathing pattern. When you practice sighting every 3rd or 4th stroke, you should complete the normal breath then turn your head to look forward. Place your head back in the water after sighting a landmark at the end of the pool. You might want to lean a kickboard up against the wall, or use a chair or other fixture as a point for sighting. Keep the flow of breathing and sighting even throughout the drill.
Workout #2 helps you prepare for disaster. The problems covered include goggle replacement, swim cap replacement, and cramp removal. The cap and goggle recovery drill will help you develop good swimming techniques for replacing cap and goggles while still moving forward. Going down the pool you swim with the cap off and tucked into your swimsuit, goggles around your neck and eyes closed. These are not fun swimming drills, but if your goggles are dislodged or lost in open water you will be thankful for the practice. Try to make it fun by getting your goggles in place faster on each return lap.
