The setup of this drill involves splitting the group into pairs each. Then, the cones are used to create gates which are about three yards apart.
Every player takes a turn attempting to pass the ball between the gates. A point is granted every time the ball passes through the gates without touching a cone. The rule of the game is that each player stays behind his own line. A shot can be played with within or outside of the foot through the goal. The accepting player needs to be able to control the ball behind his own line and try to pass the ball through the goal (if by absence of control the ball bounces back into the goal, it doesn’t count). As the players enhance and improve, it will be beneficial to increase the length of the territory or reduce the overall size of the goal. The touches should be limited to 3 only, and as the players enhance and improve on their skills, the number of touches should be cut down to two. The players can play the game for five minutes and they themselves need to keep track of their own points. The objective of the players practicing this drill, are to firstly control the ball before setting up the pass. Secondly, the players need to be able to gain momentum and achieve pace, while focusing on the accuracy of their passes. The progression of this drill would be when two players remain in the grid on every side of the goal. Only after both the players have touched the ball is it passed through the gate.
Some of the conditions necessary for Passing through the gate drill:
It is necessary for both the players to touch the ball and the ball must not stop during this encounter. If by any chance, the ball does stop or is passed without both players touching it, the other team will be awarded a point. Also, the first pair of players able to score ten points will win the game.
