Power Finesse is a good soccer drill that includes both goalkeepers and the players. This drill assists players with close up finesse shots as well as first touch power shots. It helps the goalkeepers with the technique of limiting rebound opportunities and cutting down angles. The set of this soccer drill involves setting a goal with one of the keepers. There are a line of players and the coach is equipped with a lot of soccer balls.
The game begins with first player in line taking a shot from about 20 yards out in the field. After the player takes his shot, he then heads towards the goal that is setup and the coach’s job is to serve him a ball right in front of the goal for a nice and clean finesse shot. If the player were to miss both the shots, he is out of the game and is asked to sit out. If he is able to hit at least one shot, he receives a ball and advances to the end of the line and is still part of the game. Let’s say a player is able to make both the shots, he has the opportunity to “challenge” any one of the players standing in line. The challenged player has to make both the shots. If he is not able to, he also will be out of the game.
One coaching point for this type of drill is that as there can be a long line of players in this game, the coach should let players play it at tournaments or in between games just to keep the kids busy. Furthermore, players who are shooting power shots are required to lean over the ball while making their shot. If they were to lean back, they are more likely to shoot the soccer ball above and over the net. As for the closer finesse shots, placement of the player and the ball are more important than power.
