Speed racer is one of the dribbling soccer drills. It is a dribbling drill for younger players. Players ranging from the age of 6 to 10 are more prone to be trained through this drill. The setup of this type of drill is very simple and basic. It involves creating a large circle using cones on the soccer field.
The game begins with players finding and standing next to one of the cones. On hearing the whistle blown by the coach, the players are required to race around the track. The goal of this drill is to try to be the first player to be back next to their cone.
A progression of this simple soccer drill could be to tell the players that they can go or run in any direction. This will then force them to keep their heads up.
The reason that this drill is taught to all the players is because it trains your players to run with the ball at opposition defenders, which in turn makes it difficult for the defenders to either turn, tackle or chase. This technique is in one way used to scare off defenders at any stage or level in the game by running at them with the ball at a fast speed. It is a known fact that even defenders that are very good find it hard to cope with a player capable of or possessing this skill. The ability of a player to dribble at top speed is a soccer skill which differentiates the great attacking soccer players from those who are considered just good or average. This soccer technique is important for every soccer player in any position to have but it is most frequently used by the attacking soccer players, especially the players who are considered wide players and who commonly find themselves in one on one positions.
