Split the defenders is a soccer drill which helps in training players. This game play is mostly for older players. The setup of this game involves dividing all the players into teams of 3. Each team will consist of 2 players. The yard grid in this soccer drill is 25×25. 4 players cooperate on the outside of the network while the 2 defenders deal with them within the grid. The four players on the outside keep ownership and keep the ball from the safeguarding group in the grid. The outside group only makes a score when the passes are made between the two defenders in the game (SPLIT) and is gotten by their fellow team mate across the grid. On the off chance that a player on the attacking team commits a foul, he and his accomplice become the defenders and the group winning the ball comes outside the cones and joins alternate aggressors. At the point when the defensive team gets split, they need to win the ball 1 additional time. So for instance, say the 2 defenders get split 2 times before winning the ball, they should win the ball 3 times before exchanging with the attackers.
Variations that can be made in this game could include limiting the amount of or number of touches per possession. Furthermore, they could continue playing the same game, but now, expand the grid on all sides by approximately 3-5 yards and instead of having players play outside the grid, they can have them play inside it.
Here are some coaching points for this type of drill:
It should be made sure that the attacking players are moving for their accomplices and are opening up in space. It is also recommended that the balls are passed with great pace and on target. Lastly, it is important to encourage players to impart communication both verbally and with their body and hands.
