Teaching a child how to play golf can be a difficult time if not done correctly. Children pick up on things faster than adults, however if their teaching is handled the wrong way they may never properly learn the game. The following are some things you need to look out for when teaching your child how to play golf.
Give Them the Chance to Make Major Decisions
We all have tendency to want to teach kids the ‘right’ way and enforce rules and tricks on them however that is not the best way for a child to learn the game. They need to be given the space to explore on their own and figure out things for themselves. Kids just want to have fun. Spend time watching them play, explain things they are inquisitive about but let them do things their way. This way they’ll become more invested in it and as they practice more they will automatically ask you for help, which is when you can teach them what is needed.
Give Them the Right Equipment
Some of the issues that kids have are directly related to using the wrong equipment. They may using clubs that are too stiff or heavy for them to wield which are difficult to swing and control. Due to this a child will swing on an arc that is too flat relative to his height which causes the club to hit the ground before it reaches the ball. You can’t solve this problem by just cutting down the club to a shorter length: you need to buy them equipment made for their height, with lighter club grips that make it easier for them to get the ball to fly at the desired trajectory.
Make It Fun for Them
Kids don’t want complicated instructions or lectures; they want to enjoy themselves. What they need and want is praise. When a kid hits a good shot say “Good shot!” and when they hit a bad shot say “Great effort!” If you make it difficult for them and put pressure on them to perform well, they will not enjoy the game and won’t want to golf very often.
