Volleyball tryouts are designed to evaluate potential new players for a volleyball team to see which ones can make the cut. If you’re a coach, then one of the best ways to evaluate your players is to have your potential players perform some volleyball drills so that you can get a feel for whose strengths lie where.
The Passing Tryout Drill: Passing is without a doubt one of the most crucial volleyball skills and without it it’s going be hard to play effectively with the team. To see how effective your players are at passing simply perform this passing drill.
Start by setting up a target close to the net that will represent the setter. Then toss the ball over the net to the player who must then proceed to pass the ball to the setter (aka. the target). Then throw the ball to a different position on the court and continue this process until you’ve done it ten times.
The Setting Tryout Drill: Once again setting is another important skill that must be mastered to become a great volleyball player and this drill is designed to test a player’s ability to set.
To perform this drill set the player up in the right back and have the coach hit the ball and then toss it to the setter position. Once the coach has hit the ball the player should move into the setter position and set the ballot on the outside. Once again repeat this process ten times and keep track of how well the player performs to get a good idea of their setting ability.
The Conditioning Drill: Performing conditioning drills during a tryout will help to test a player’s endurance levels as well as their ability to push their bodies for short bursts and then rests. One great way to find out a player’s ability to push their selves is through sprinting and this drill incorporates just that.
Start by lining up all the players on the end line of a basketball court and then start a clock as each player runs to the opposite end of the court touching the end line with their hand. For every sprint, they successfully do to the end of line give them a point. Continue to sprint until they have reached a total of 10 times and make a note of how quickly each player has completed their sprint.
